Best Learning Framework

How we write instructions that keep busy adults interested — and keep them learning by doing. Built for FedM8 Academy; reusable anywhere we teach.

1. What we optimize for

Busy owners will not finish a course. They will finish one useful action that moves a real bid forward.

OutcomeMeaning
StartOpen a lesson without a 45-minute lecture tax
FinishObjective → practice the same day
TransferWork happens in the tool, not only in Academy
ReturnCome back for the next small win
Honest skillNo fake pWin, no invented past performance
Teaching never lives inside tool UIs. Tools stay clean. Academy links out. Voice scripts stay internal.

2. What we take from research

SourceKeep
Knowles (andragogy)Why first, experience, problem-centered, self-direction
Merrill (First Principles)Problem → activate → show → do → integrate
GagnéAttention, objective, guidance, practice, feedback, transfer
Keller ARCSAttention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction
Cognitive load / microlearningOne objective, short units, strip fluff
Spaced + retrieval practiceRevisit later; recall by doing, not re-reading
Deliberate practiceSpecific goal, immediate attempt, visible mistakes

We reject LMS theater: long modules, fake quizzes, and completion % without transfer.

3. Core loop

HOOK → WHY → SHOW → DO → CHECK → RETURN
StepJobFedM8 form
HOOKAttention in <10sTitle + objective tied to a buyer problem
WHYRelevanceWhat fails if you skip this
SHOWGuidanceOrdered steps naming real screens
DOApplicationpractice — one concrete tool action
CHECKFeedbackmistakes — self-correct traps
RETURNSpacingWeekly practice · school path · Coach next step

If a lesson cannot name a DO in a real tool (or official government site), it is not ready.

4. Lesson card schema

  1. objective — One verb phrase; what they can do after.
  2. why — Cost of skipping (time, money, eligibility, lost bid).
  3. steps — 3–6 concrete actions; unique first step; name the surface.
  4. mistakes — 1–3 traps people actually hit.
  5. practice — Same-day / same-week finish line.
  6. tool — Link out. Never bury the lesson in the tool.

Forbidden: generic “Open the surface where…” steps · feature soup without a problem · win/loss fiction · voice scripts in subscriber UI.

5. Keep people interested

Mechanics that earn their keep

6. Keep people learning

Reading ≠ learning. Learning = changed performance on the next notice.

  1. Retrieval by doing — practice forces recall.
  2. Spacing — schools + weekly digest + Coach beats one binge Saturday.
  3. Interleaving — mix find → qualify → capture across the week.
  4. Feedback from reality — amendments, fit factors, Win patterns, empty states.
  5. Prior experience — NAICS, certs, vault facts they already have.
  6. Self-direction — filter by school/phase; skip what they know.
  7. Transfer check — opened the tool and finished practice = only completion that counts.
Habit recipe: one lesson → one practice → one pipeline update → stop. Come back tomorrow or after the next alert.

7. School design

SchoolPromiseSuccess
Free — Get readyLegal + market literate before payingSAM path, NAICS story, prime/sub clarity
Basic — Find & bidCut firehose; first compliant submitSaved searches, bid/no-bid, Coach progress
Pro — Compete & streamlineStop losing blindIncumbents, matrices, vault-grounded Assist

Do not require Pro lessons to finish Free readiness. Improve copy from user friction — never regenerate generic templates.

8. Writing checklist

9. Lightweight measurement

SignalHealthy
Lesson → tool clickHappens often
Coach checks / practice doneRising with usage
Saved searches after Basic lessonsNon-zero
Vault blocks before Assist packageNon-zero for Pro
“Where do I start?” supportDecreasing

Vanity: time-on-page, lessons opened without practice.

10. One-line for agents

HOOK → WHY → SHOW → DO → CHECK → RETURN

Adult problem first. Micro lesson. Real tool practice. Mistakes as feedback. Space the return. Teaching out of the tools. Voice scripts internal. Improve from friction — never from templates.
