This is not a tone palette. It is how to sound like a person who has done the work, talking to a person who is tired.

If the page could have been written by a demo bot that never lost a weekend to SAM, throw it out.

The problem we are fixing

AI default voice sells. It stacks features. It smiles with adjectives. It says “unlock,” “seamless,” “powerful,” “next-gen,” “all-in-one,” “designed for modern teams.”

Real humans teaching real humans do something else:

1. They name the mess.
2. They care that the mess costs time, money, or dignity.
3. They show one clear next move.
4. They shut up.

Purpose. Emotion. Flow. If any one is missing, it reads fake.

Three pillars

1. Purpose

Every block of copy must answer: why does this exist for this person, right now?

Not “what does the feature do.” Not “what can the platform offer.”

Ask:

• What decision does this help them make?
• What hour does this give back?
• What mistake does this stop?

If you cannot answer in one plain sentence, you do not understand the block yet. Do not write.

2. Emotion

Emotion is not hype. Emotion is honesty about how it feels.

Allowed:

• Frustration (“forty tabs and still no plan for Monday”)
• Relief (“one search that stays saved”)
• Fear named cleanly (“expired SAM mid-proposal”)
• Pride without swagger (“a matrix with every shall owned”)
• Respect (“you already know your trade — this is the federal paperwork layer”)

Forbidden:

• Fake excitement
• Corporate empathy theater (“we know how busy you are!”)
• Threat theater (“don’t get left behind”)
• Bro marketing (“crush your pipeline”)

Emotion without purpose is melodrama. Purpose without emotion is a manual. Together they feel human.

3. Flow

Flow means the reader always knows where they are in a story.

Not a pile of cards. Not a feature grid that could be shuffled randomly.

Every surface gets a storyboard before sentences:

Beat	Job
1. World	Where are they standing?
2. Pressure	What hurts or is at risk?
3. Truth	What is actually true / what we refuse to fake?
4. Move	What do they do next?
5. Proof	What do they leave holding? (artifact, decision, calm)

If beats 1–4 are missing, you are listing. Listing is what AI does when it does not care.

Storyboard first (always)

Before any homepage hero, pricing block, empty state, lesson, or email:

1. Write the storyboard in five lines — World / Pressure / Truth / Move / Proof.
2. Say it out loud. If you cringe, fix the board, not the adjectives.
3. Only then write the visible copy.
4. Cut anything that does not serve a beat.

Tiny example (Bid Coach)

• World: You want a first federal bid.
• Pressure: SAM is a firehose; weekends disappear into tabs.
• Truth: You need a sequence, not another dashboard.
• Move: Open Bid Coach; finish one required item today.
• Proof: A checked step and a saved search — not a finished novel of a proposal.

That storyboard becomes human copy. Without it, you get “3-level first-bid path with progress bar and deep dives.”

The Human Voice rules

1. Talk to one person. Prefer “you” and “your firm.” Avoid “users,” “stakeholders,” “organizations seeking…”
2. One idea per section. One headline job. One supporting sentence. One move.
3. Specific over universal. “September rush in your NAICS” beats “optimize seasonality insights.”
4. Short sentences earn long ones. If every sentence is a clause pile, it is AI.
5. Name the tradeoff. “Notify me is a waitlist, not a charge.” Honesty builds trust.
6. Verbs that a hand can do. Open, save, write, call, download, decide. Not leverage, unlock, empower.
7. Kill the salesman words. See ban list below.
8. Read aloud. If you would not say it to a tired veteran owner across a table, rewrite.
9. Leave room for silence. Do not fill every inch with benefits.
10. Respect their competence. Teach the federal layer; do not teach them how to run a business.

Surface playbooks

Marketing (homepage, plans, ads)

• Brand first, then one problem, then one move.
• First viewport is one composition — not a dashboard of promises.
• Problem language over feature language.
• CTA tells the truth (Start free / Subscribe when Checkout is live — not “Buy now” when buy is closed).

Product UI (buttons, empty states, banners)

• Empty states teach the next click, not the product vision.
• Errors name the fix, not the stack.
• Labels a stranger can parse. Federal jargon wears a dotted definition (assets/gloss.js) — do not lecture the term in a paragraph.
• No celebration modals for ordinary saves.

Teaching (Academy)

• Story → teach → what to do → watch out → try this.
• Human titles (“A path to your first compliant bid”) not catalog names.
• Never show writer framework labels (HOOK/WHY) to learners.

Email / alerts

• Subject = what happened. Body = what to do. Stop.
• No “exciting updates.” No feature newsletters dressed as urgency.

Portal / agent notes

• Write for the next stranger agent or the CEO at midnight.
• Facts, traps, verify steps. Still human — not telegraphic nonsense, not essay.
